Mancave Monday – TCW Reinforcement Blind Boosters

Tonight was a very exciting time in the Mancave as some lovely goodies I had ordered arrived and just in the nick of time.

Given it was the first glimpse of the Star Trek Beyond trailer and the worldwide premier on Star Wars:The Force Awakens it seemed fitting that my 3 sets of Star Trek Attack Wing Reinforcement Blind Boosters for Temporal Cold War and my final outstanding Star Wars X-Wing Ship, Tantive IV, both arrived.

Some time ago David Montgomery of The ShipYard YouTube channel previewed the STAW Reinforcement Boosters and I shared links each day to his videos (links to the videos can be found below).  Over winter Wizkids will be running The Temporal Cold War OP Series (based off the Enterprise episodes).  Each month players will participate in a scenario and build a 90pt fleet using all standard build rules and formats (check with your venue and TO for further advice).  Each player will then receive a randomly assigned Blind Booster to build an additional 40pt ship from which must be used.

For all of you who follow here and either don’t use Facebook or The Hairy Gamers (and why not!?) I’m going to provide links to each of my comments and the videos.

The Hairy Gamers can be found at https://www.facebook.com/TheHairyGamers?ref=bookmarks you can find a brief write up of each Blind Booster by me on that page which links to the videos attached below.  I dont want to steal David’s thunder as he’s done some great work on behalf of the STAW Community so please, please, please go take a look at his YouTube Channel and Subscribe.

Star Trek Attack Wing Wave 19 Reveal – IKS Rotarran

The second in the series of Wave 19 reveals by StarTrek.com for WizKidsStar Trek Attack Wing sees the Klingons get some love. The IKS Rotarran, a B’Rel class Bird-Of-Prey, is added to the arsenal for all Klingon players fleets. Taken from the DS9 episodes “By Infernos Light”, “Soldiers of the Empire”, “Blaze of Glory” and “A Call to Arms” the recurring IKS Rotarran was a Klingon Bird-of-Prey that was in service with the Klingon Defense Force in the late 24th century. The Rotarran served with distinction during the Dominion War, with General Martok using the vessel as his flagship. It had developed an unfair reputation as a ‘cursed’ ship whose crew had all been dishonoured. In late-2373, General Martok was assigned command of the Rotarran by the Klingon High Council and dispatched to locate the missing IKS B’Moth. Joining him as his first officer was Lieutenant Commander Worf and Lieutenant Commander Jadzia Dax as science officer. Both were serving on detached duty from Starfleet at the time. Plotting course for the last known position of the B’Moth, the Rotarran was forced to circumnavigate the Tong Beak Nebula in order to avoid the Jem’Hadar. Martok’s wish to avoid a fight struck a sour chord with his weary crew. On the way, Martok reviewed his crew’s personnel reports, which included remarks such as: “Dishonorable conduct,” “lack of respect,” “dereliction of duty,” “inattention to orders,” “unmotivated,” and “insufficiently aggressive.” This did not go over well with Martok nor Worf, Martok likening the report to a prison record. Together they vowed to restore honor to the Rotarran and make it a ship worthy of the Empire.

http://www.startrek.com/article/first-look-i-k-s-rotarran-for-attack-wing-wave-19

The “IKS Rotarran” is a standard B’Rel Bird-of-Prey with the named version having stats of 4-1-3-3. It comes with 2 Crew, 1 Secondary Weapon and 1 Tech upgrade slots on its bar and Actions of Evade, Target Lock, Cloak and Sensor Echo. At first the Rotarran sought to “avoid conflict” with the Jem’Hadar. This is reflected in the Rotarran’s special ability that, as an action, allows the ship to perform a second maneuver on the maneuver dial with a speed of 1 or 2. After taking that action, the Rotarran gets an Auxiliary Token and cannot attack this turn. This is nicely thematic and whilst reflecting the defensive nature of the ship it also can be used to bank or turn into arc and fire upon an unsuspecting ship that it normally wouldnt be able to attack. I like this ability as it is very Klingon and in keeping with this expansions theme. The Named version comes in at 22 points whilst the generic loses a shield and costs 20pts.

Obviously it would be remiss of Wizkids to not include another version of Martok in this expansion given his link to this ship and we are not disappointed. “Martok is a CS7 Captain costing 4pts who comes ready to equip with an Elite Talent. As an ability Martok can reduce the cost of all other Klingon upgrades by -1pt. Additionally, when attacking, Martok allows the player to take an action to roll 2 less attack dice to add 1 hit result to his roll, if all upgrades on this ship are Klingon, you roll only one less attack die to gain 1 hit result instead. If you have the Action economy to use this ability then this can really help you, especially in the faction pure environment and its nice to see Wizkids acknowledging faction purity even if unofficially.

So Martok can bring an Elite Talent to his ship but what options do we have here? Well this ship has not one, not two but three Elite Talents! “The Day is Ours!” is a 4pt discard allowing a player to add one critical hit result to the roll during the Roll Attack Dice Step but only if it is equipped to a Klingon Ship with a Klingon Captain. This is ok and may see some usage between Martok, the Torpedo upgrade (which I’ll cover later) and this you might be hitting for at least 2 Crits and a guaranteed hit.

“Alert Status One” is another discard action costing 3pts in order to place a battle stations token next to your ship. Not sure how I feel about this in honesty…….3pts to take a BS? Its a significantly weaker version of Defence Condition One but for 4pts I could take the Action Crew Drex or N’Garen who are better BS converters.

Finally, “Supreme Commander” is another 5pts Action discard that allows the player to give another friendly ship within range 1-3 a free action from its action bar. If the targeted ship was a Klingon ship it may perform ANY action…….not sure what this means but if it means as read then potentially Klingon ships could take Battlestation, Scan or even Regenerate Actions. That could make for some very interesting combinations.

With no other captains to review lets look at crew upgrades starting off with yet another version of Worf. “First Officer Worf” provides a +1 bonus to your captain skill, which increases to +3 if you have a Klingon Captain. Simulating the near mutiny on Rotarran if your captain is ever disabled or discarded, Worf becomes the new captain with a skill level of 5. Worfs special ability to boost a Klingon captain cannot be used on himself so no shenanigans there although it does in theory allow the Klingons to now deploy a captain with CS of 14 (Ch’Tang Martok (9) + Admiral Gorkon (+1) + Klingon Fleet Captain (+2) + Rotarran Worf (+3) = 14).

Next up is Jadzia Dax who joined Worf on leave from Starfleet to serve as Science Officer aboard the Rotarran. “Jadzia Dax” allows you to spend a scan token to convert 1 battle stations result on your die into a hit or evade result. This is really in keeping with the idea of turning the tide of battle and thematically Klingon. Considered to be one of their own, Jadzia Dax does not pay a faction penalty when assigned to a Klingon ship so gets added to the list of options we can use when considering Penalty Pure fleet lists. At a hefty price of 5 points and given that the only Klingon ship with a Scan Action is the Somraw this may be an upgrade you simply cant afford to build around or include. You will almost certainly need to use upgrades and other crew to acquire Scan tokens. Not sure she’ll see much play as a Klingon crew so its a good job she has a Federation icon.

This expansion is very crew heavy. the ship itself only has two slots and we’ve already seen two crew but there are three more included to boost the options available to you. First up we’ll look at “Leskit” the helmsman of the Rotarran, who allows you to convert a red maneuver into a green maneuver. If your ship is cloaked when you do this, you can perform a sensor echo as a free action. Hes a 3pt discard crew but I like this ability! Given the way Klingons joust and come about to hit you again the ability to swap a red come about for a green come about is amazing! No Auxiliary Power Tokens for doing so…..is this worth 3pts? Yes I personally think so. I can see this upgrade seeing table time in many Klingon fleets.

“Tavana” the ships Engineering officer allows you to repair 1 shield token by disabling himself. If your ship is cloaked you may also repair one damage to your hull but you roll -2 attack dice on all attacks this round. If you’re out of arc this is a decent enough ability. The fact you can repair Shields and Hull at the cost of a reduced attack is nice, sure its situational but it could really save you if needed. Considering this is the usual 5pt Klingon crew upgrade the fact he is only a disable puts him above current options of Bu’Kah (4pt discard to repair 2 to hull if you performed a green maneuver) and Konmel (3 pt Action, not cloaked and repair 1 shield). The ability to reuse Tavana and remain cloaked elevates him in my opinion.

Finally the Weapons Officer, “Kornan” allows the player to take an action to place a target lock on an enemy ship within range 1-3 and then perform another action on the ships action bar as a free action but not the Target Lock Action. Ok thats nice but thats where it ends, he is a 5pt Action Discard….c’mon Wizkids, give the pastyheaded rageoholics some love!!!! Im disappointed by this.

So we have 5 crew for 2 slots. What about Secondary Weapon options in this pack? The Rotarran packs a punch with a new “Photon Torpedoes” that utilizes the new Time Token mechanic. Instead of disabling the weapon when it fires the players places 3 time tokens on the card. During the end phase one time token is removed. When no time tokens remain on the card the weapon is ready to fire again. This is a standard Range 2-3 5 Attack Dice torpedo that allows you to convert 1 Battlestations result into a Critical result. If combined with an all Klingon crew and Captain Martok then you could roll 4 dice and get 1 autohit plus the BS to Crit conversion. Meh…….I’d rather a boost to a B’Rel firing as that precedent has been set on Negh/Var and Vor’Cha classes.

Oddly whilst this ship comes equipped with a Tech slot no Tech upgrades seem to be included in the pack. More unseen upgrades may be included but StarTrek.com are usually pretty good and would have revealed it. Such a shame.

So having reviewed everything Im going to try and build a Faction Pure vessel from this expansion built to Wizkids Suggested Rules Format limits of 50pts:-

IKS Rotarran – 22pts
Martok – 4pts
The Day Is Ours! – 3pts (4pts overridden to 3pts by Martok)
Worf – 1pt (2pts overridden to 1pt by Martok)
Leskit – 2pts (3pts overridden to 2pts by Martok)
Photon Torpedos – 4pts (5pts overridden to 4pts by Martok)

Total – 36pts

What do you think about how I built this ship? How would you build it? Go take a look and let me know….comment below.

Mancave update

Apologies to everyone in Mancave-land as I haven’t posted in about a week a lot has happened.  Firstly its been the birthday of two important people in my life in the last week.  Last weekend it was my youngest daughter, Phoebe’s, birthday and this weekend just gone it was my better half, Lucy’s birthday.  Happy birthday ladies!

So what has been going on then?  Well firstly after nearly two years of waiting my copies of AvP:The Hunt Begins finally arrived in the Mancave following a haphazard and uncommunicative Kickstarter.  I’ve enjoyed limited success with Kickstarters and to be honest this entire experience has left a rather bitter aftertaste for me.  I’ve watched as “limited edition Kickstarter exclusive” copies of a game I and many other have funded and made possible made their way to retailers before we’d even been given a sniff of the game….so much for our Limited edition copies eh?   Everything that made our game exclusive is now anything but.  Regardless of that fact my two copies eventually arrived…only 9 days after I could have walked into a FLGS and bought it cheaper.  I’ll do a full review some other time as I’ve now punched all the card elements and started assembling models from one of my copies.  The other copy I gave to Hairy Gamer and long term geek-mance Tris who is still waiting to receive any semblance of notification for his AvP Kickstarter.

20150709_172015-1 20150709_172105-1 20150709_172702-1

Monday saw the monthly Imperial Assault campaign swing into action again.  Dave returned to the fold to pick up his sniper and get his kill on.  Recently we had enjoyed moderate success in the campaign picking up a few close but hard fought wins.  This session our objective was to attack and deactivate a secret Imperial Research Facility and achieve this within 5 game turns.  The Facility was heavily fortified with armoured doors and Stormtroopers defending it.  With no idea what was within we had to clear any resistance to us from outside and get through it as fast as possible.  To be honest we were not expecting success and thought Alan, our GM, may have some nasty surprises in store for us inside.  By the end of turn one our organised teamwork had allowed us to kill five Stormtroopers and Stun and destroy the Probe Droid guarding the door.  Next turn we blasted through the door and my smuggler stressed herself to race through the structure and see what was lying in wait.  Everything was going to plan as everything Alan deployed got very quickly destroyed by our Soldier with his Havoc shots.  Everything happened so fast I didn’t even get a chance to take pictures and for that I apologise again.  We were outrageously successful this month and I’m sure that next month Alan’s Imperial’s will come back stronger and nastier.  With only 3 sessions left until the end of the campaign I have to say that I’ve really enjoyed participating in it and will hopefully run one of my own once this is finished.  Dave Baxter and I were also chatting about the skirmish variant of the game so with any luck you may see some reports of that on the Mancave as things progress.  Watch this space!

Other things have been going on though…..it seems like pretty much everything I do is sponsored by the letter T.  So much like Sesame Street todays update will be sponsored by the letter T.

T stands for TIE-Advanced.  This week saw me finally get my dirty Imperial hands on Darth Vader in his TIE-Advanced for my Star Wars X-Wing collection.  I’ve been after a TIE-Advanced for a while as it was one of the few ships I was missing plus with the Imperial Raider inbound in August it was going to improve the Imperial Navy.  I may even get to use it next week in the NAGA X-Wing League match I have scheduled with Brent Jay on Wednesday.

T also stands for Terminator:Genisys.  Recently I deboxed and reviewed this game by RiverHorse Games in a blog post but hadn’t up until last night had the chance to do much more to it.  During the May trip to Salute 2015 Hairy Gamer Tris and I watched in awe as Warlord Games ran a competition to see who could assemble the Terminator Endoskeleton miniature from this game in the fastest time.  I don’t know what the final timings were but people were able to assemble these snip and clip miniatures in about 40-50 seconds each.  Armed with my snips, some files and a camera I set about assembling the 10 Terminator Endoskeletons, 5 Crawlers, 16 Resistance soldiers and 1 Limited Edition white metal Kyle Reese (athough it should be resin) in their varied configurations.  Sadly only 2 variants of the Terminators are supplied but the Resistance have a reasonable amount of customization with 4 different poses and 6 different weapon options.  .  I wasn’t really trying hard to do it quickly but a little under an hour later I had a full set of assembled miniatures that I was happy with and could game with.  I must admit that they were very easy to assemble and get to grips with.  Once assembled they do have the look of little green Army men about them.  They aren’t without their issues (some of the faces look a little like Nuclear disaster victims) and its nothing that a spot of glue here and there and maybe some green stuff filler cant fix but for a first pass they will certainly do.  Next will be to get some paint onto them.  I imagine painting Terminators will be as easy as painting Xeno’s from AvP and Resistance fighters will be similar to USCM Marines from AvP.  I can use similar techniques and styles for both although I imagine the results will be very different.  I posted pictures of my progress on my Facebook page last night.

Lastly, my final T stands for Trek.  Tonight I managed to debox my last few ships – two copies each of the Federation USS Prometheus, Klingon IKS Ning’Tao and Bajoran Ratosha from Wave 15 of Wizkids Star Trek Attack Wing.  I had previously previewed these ships on Mancave so all that is left for me to do is post some pictures and total up the damage.  I would post the same pics in this blog post but for some reason WordPress is being a bit funny with me so I may use links instead:-

Bajoran Scout Ship, Ratosha.

Bajoran Scout Ship, Ratosha.

Klingon B'rel Bird Of Prey, IKS Ning'Tao.

Klingon B’rel Bird Of Prey, IKS Ning’Tao.

Federation Prometheus class, USS Prometheus.

Federation Prometheus class, USS Prometheus.

I find myself sitting on 287 ships now including at least 2 of every ship (some as many as 4 and one 15!!!) and 3 of every prize and Limited Edition release available.  I have 21 ships awaiting purchase of a new storage cabinet/display case so they can be put away properly.  So a little trip to Ikea may be required this weekend to buy another Detolf Display Case although I have been trying to source some spare shelves to mod my existing units.

Star Trek Thursday – Q-Continuum:Deja-Q

Evening Mancavers!

Tonight I will be showing the cards and ships from the Q-Continuum Month 2 OP Event “Deja-Q”.  The Prize for this event is the I.K.S Korinar, a Klingon B’Rel class Bird-of-Prey.

It was featured in the Deep Space 9 episode “Sons of Mogh” where IKS Korinar warned the runabout USS Yukon away from investigating an apparent explosion of a cloaked object in 2372, claiming that the Klingons were conducting military exercises. The IKS Korinar was in fact participating in a Klingon effort to mine the Bajoran system.

Were I to try and build a ship in a Ship Pure environment using Wizkids Suggested Rules Format out of this expansion I’d probably go with:-

IKS Korinar (22)

Kurn (3)

Mauk-To’Vor (5 reduced to 3)

Klingon Stealth Team (5)

Ambush Attack (5)

Cloaked Mines (3)

Total (41)

Sadly there aren’t enough cards in this expansion to even fill all the upgrade slots on this vessel, which is annoying.  I;d have thought even a generic set of Photon Torpedos would enhance this ship especially given the Rear Arc.  Its a nice little ship with some clever tricks such as the Elite Talent Mauk-To’Vor which allows you to sacrifice your Captain to add a number of Attack Dice equal to half their Captain Skill rounded down (upto 3 max).  This isn’t very useful in this pack as Kurn isn’t the highest skill captain, also in general it suffers from some of the issues that Klingons have…Action heavy, expensive, discard upgrades with limitations.  Its a common problem with Klingon upgrades.

Klingons also get access to some Cloaked Mines which on the face of it seem like a poor variant of the Romulan ones.

All in all this ship will make a nice little “wingman” type vessel for harrassing flanks and attacking as part of a pack.  I don’t think it has the longevity to shift the better Klingon vessels out there…the K’Vort’s, K’Tinga’s and Vor’cha’s.

Let me know what you think.  Post a comment and I’ll reply as soon as I can.

Star Trek Attack Wing: The Collective OP3 “The Battle for Sector 001”

Today I participated and volunteered at a local stores Star trek Attack Wing Tournament in Coventry.  Young’s Hobbies were running The Collective OP Month 3 event “The Battle for Sector 001”.  Scott Young runs the tourney and Im there as rules support/TO.

There was quite a good mix of abilities and experiences of the players, only Scott, Daniel Ryan, Ashton Batchelor and I had played in all the other events in this OP Series so far.  My biggest competition could not attend so the path was clear for me to win the series overall.  As a TO and volunteer I dont take prizes or payment in any way and I actually pay the same as they players so I run competitive fleets.

I had a number of options to run in todays tournament…..I had…Federation/Dominion with Officer Exchange Program (OEP) using Intrepids and a reliant, Klingon Pure with Vor’Cha and K’Vort, Klingon/Romulan OEP with Vor’Cha, Dominion/Indepednent, Klingon/Independent, Klingon Pure 2 with only Vor’Cha, Breen Pure, Romulan Pure using Interphase Generators, Federation Pure with Fighters, Independent Pure with Lores Meat Gringer, Mirror Universe/Independent OEP using Negh’Var and Assimilation Target Prime, Kling Pure 3 using Changs BoP and Torpedos, Dominion Pure with Triple Keldons & Fighters, Romulan/Federation OEP and Dom Pure with assimilated Galor.

Armed with enough ships to sink a battleship Hairy Gamer Tris and I set off for Youngs Hobbies.

Tris took the following:-

Chang’s Bird-of-Prey (22)
Chang (4)
Surrender as Ordered (4)
Kunivas (2)
Photon Torpedoes (5)
Ship SP: 37

Vor’cha Class (26)
Martok (5)
Klingon Flagship (10)
Defense Condition One (5)
Drex (4)
Ship SP: 40

Vor’cha Class (26)
Nu’Daq (3)
N’Garen (4)
Ship SP: 33

Total Build SP: 120

I went with:-

Resource: Hideki Class Attack Fighters (20)

Cardassian Keldon Class (24)
Gul Dukat (5)
Ship SP: 29

Cardassian Keldon Class (24)
Luaran (2)
Boheeka (0)
Ship SP: 26

Cardassian Keldon Class (24)
Sar (1)
Ship SP: 25

Dominion Attack Fighters (20)
Ship SP: 20

Both builds dropped a lot of attack dice but Tris’ relied on getting good defence from Cloak and moving free actions around from Martok to Nu’Daq and Chang.  Mine was relying on my fighters soaking up some damage and hitting hard and fast.

The other players fielded fleets as follows and I’ll post a comment for each fleet below:-

Scott Young – Mirror Universe

Ashton Batchelor & Daniel Ryan – Federation

Aaron James – Borg

A hard fought afternoon was undertaken and eventually I was declared the not only the winner of the event with 3 wins out of 3 with an almost perfect record but the winner of the series with 8 wins out of 9 and a total of 29 out of a possible 33 Battle Points overall.

Round 1 Round 2 Round 3 Star Trek Attack Wing The Collective - The Battle for Sector 001 Results

1 – Jason 29 (Admiral)

2 – Daniel Ryan 17 (Vice Admiral)

3 – Ashton Batchelor 16 (Rear Admiral)

4 – Daniel “Orky Dan” Thomas 15 (Commodore)

5 – Scott Young 12 (Fleet Captain)

6 – Andy McGarry 11 (Captain)

=7 – Tris Taylor 10 (Commander)

=7 – Anthony Marsden 10 (Commander)

=9 – Nigel Thomas 6 (Lieutenant)

=9 – Aaron James 6 (Lieutenant)

11 – Kevin Roberts 5 (Ensign)

=12 – Owen Cartwright 4 (Ensign JG)

=12 – Nic Harbut 4 (Ensign JG)

We had to have a roll off to see who won between Ashton and Tris as both fleets were wiped out by the Borg Cube Token and neither player scored enough damage to beat it.  This was missed during the tourney as we scored it as a Tie.  So I rolled for each on their behalf and and recorded the results.  In the end it was Tris who scored 1 Battlestation on 5 dice and Ashton who got 3.  That game went to Ashton.

STAW 9: Rude Interruption (@ NAGA 04-03-2015)

So during my Warzone demo with Anthony Evans we had discussed some members of Phat Katz coming over for some demo or taster games of Star Trek Attack Wing.  We’d ummed and ooohhhhed and aaahhhhed about it and finally this week we managed to get something in the schedule that suited us both.  I asked Anthony if any of his Phat Katz buddies also wanted a taster session or game.  I offered to either run a game and go through each phase slowly as if they were novices to the game or play within it myself.  We agreed that I’d also play.  Anthony indicated that he wanted to play Borg or Klingon.  Given my feelings towards Borg (STAW Easy mode for somewhat bad pilots who can maneuver ships) and the fact that Anthony already had a Klingon ship I set about building him a reasonably competitive list I;d happily roll with using the build rules we agreed…..120pts Faction Pure.

Anthony spread the word amongst the other Phat Katz members and the challenge was taken up by Robert Howard, who had a Dominion fleet so would build a list accordingly.  At this point we get to how the scenario got named…..a forth player decided to invite himself into the game.  A 3 way game at 100 points on a 3ft by 3ft space mat is tight at best, a 4 way with 480 points is nigh on impossible without ships being ontop of eachother from the get go.  Also not helped that said player then decided to roll up with easy mode Borg.  Not the first time either.

So I set about planning my fleet and decided I would try Officer Exchange Program as my resource.  This card costs nothing to equip and has the following actions:- prior to the fleet building choose two factions, one as primary and one as secondary.  All Captains, Admirals and crew upgrades from the second faction can be added to your primary faction like factional cards.  Not only do they not incur the +1 cross factional penalty but they also get a reduction in cost by 1pt (to a minimum of 0pts).  Also all captains in your fleet, even those of the primary faction get a -1 reduction.  So given the chronic lack of action economy of Romulans I thought I’d see if Jean-Luc Picard aka The Baldy Gimmer and Spock could alleviate some of these problems for me.  This lead me to the following build:-

Reman Warbird (36)
Jean-Luc Picard (6-1=5)
Tactical Officer (3)
Ship SP: 44

Scimitar (38)
Mr. Spock (4-1=3)
Tactical Officer (3)
Ship SP: 44

Valdore (28)
Donatra (4-1=3)
Ship SP: 31

Total Build SP: 119

Anthony would play the following fleet:-

Vor’cha Class (26)
Martok (5)
Ship SP: 31

Vor’cha Class (26)
Gowron (4)
Ship SP: 30

Chang’s Bird-of-Prey (22)
Nu’Daq (3)

I’d be showing him how the interaction between Martok and Gowron works to give the Klingons the awesome firepower they have at their disposal.  I also went for some nice named ships to show him the difference between abilities and some Photon Torpedoes to compliment Chang’s Bird-Of-Preys ability.

Rob would play a Dominion fleet consisting of two Jem Hadar Attack Ships and a Jem Hadar Battleship but the exact make up of his fleet and upgrades escapes me right now so I will update with a comment later.

STAW 6: The Undiscovered Hidden Klingon Fleet (NAGA @ 07-01-2015)

The first big Star Trek Attack Wing game of the year at NAGA was a very big game indeed with each fleet deploying 150 points Fleet Pure using the “Suggested Rules Format” introduced by Wizkids last year.  It saw Josh Pembertons Romulan Fleet ally itself with my pure Cardassian Dominion Fleet against Owen Cartwrights Klingons and Derek Maynards Mirror Universe.

Due to the size of the game we decided to use a 6×4 gaming mat lengthwise with each fleet deploying at either end.  My Cardassian fleet was as follows and was a tweak and improvement on the basic triple Keldon fleet I’ve been running for recent games.  Given the limitations of the Actions the Fighters can take I wanted to try and use a resource that I’ve seldom used before and with that in mind I went for Advanced Targeting Systems to give each of my ships as much opportunity to modify dice during attacks as possible.  I’ll get the guys to send me their builds to update this thread if I can.

The plan was simple, advance, target lock, attack with superior firing arcs and destroy.

Stardate 07-01-20-15

A joint Obsidian Order/Tal Shiar strike force has been dispatched to investigate strange fluctuating readings in the Nuneaton Prime sector.  Upon arrival in the sector some Klingon ships were seen to be firing tachyon bursts into the nearby star causing it to emit strange readings.  Before further investigation could occur a rift in space tore its way through the suns core and what looked like more Klingon ships emerged.  Monitoring the communications from the safety of their advanced cloak the Romulans determined that whilst the pattern seemed Klingon in origin the ship was in fact far larger than a standard Negh’Var class vessel and was accompanied by two Defiant Class ships and a Galor class vessel.  Having heard enough of this treacherous criminal Garak in his stolen Galor class warship and his allies Dukat dispatched his armada of ships to engage the enemy and bring the traitor Garak to justice by any means necessary.

The Cardassians advanced on the left flank opposing the Mirror Universe fleet whilst the Romulans covered the right flank to halt the advance or escape of the Klingon fleet.  As the Mirror Universe fleet advanced quickly Dukat changed strategy and drove his ships into the planetary system weaving between the three planets, with fighters in support the new plan was to destroy the Klingon fleet and then turn all weapons on the Mirror Universe ships before being home in time for a well earnt glass of Canar.

The Klingons advanced on the Rolumans before being funnelled towards the planets by the careful deployment of Cloaked Mines and as the ships were turned inwards two powerful Keldon class warships were waiting, the “Wrath of Terok Nor” captained by Gul Dukat and the “Legates Fury” lead by an unnamed captain.  With both ships able to maintain multiple Target Locks and Dukats also able to go to Battlestations they made very short work of the lead Klingon vessel, a Vor’cha.  They then quickly turned their weapons on the Somraw which had been lurking at the rear of the Klingon fleet.  Shots were exchanged before the combined Keldons firepower overwhelmed the Klingon ship.  Chang had been driven off course by the Romulan Cloaked Mines and the combined firepower of the Scimitar and Avatar of Tomed destroying it in a single round of combat.

On the right flank of the combined Mirror Universe/Klingon fleet the Mirror Universe ships had left their Klingon allies to face the wrath of the Cardassians and Romulans alone and were slowly maneuvering to flank the fighter support at the rear of the Cardassian Fleet.  The faster Mirror Universe ships raced the fighters and closed the gap first leaving the fighters with a dash between planets to avoid being targetted.  One wing of Fighters did not fare so well with the combined firepower of the Regents Warship and Worfs Defiant able to take shots at long range into the unprotected rear of the fighters.  Excellent piloting and small losses meant the fighters were taking casualties but this only improived their ability to deftly weave amongst the bigger ships and avoid phaser fire.  As thier numbers thinned the superior Captain Skills of the Mirror Universe fleet enabled them to fire first on the Fighters causing even more damage.

Having now dispatched the entire Klingon fleet the remaining Cardassian vessels and disengaged Romulans swept around the planets to engage the rear ships of the Mirror Universe vessels.  The two lead Keldons applying their Advanced Targetting Systems to the two rear most ships, O’Briens Prakesh and Worfs Defiant.

As the Romulan fleet regrouped and prepared to join the assault on the Mirror Universe fleet a wave of reinforcements emerged from where the Klingons had originally deployed.  It seems that a fleet made up of exactly the same classes of ships and very similar looking and trained captains with exactly the same upgrades had been lying in wait for them.  They advanced under cloak and proceeded to attack the rearmost ships in the combined Romulan/Cardassian fleet.  The Somraw and the two Birds of Prey taking on the Romulans and a Keldon whilst the Vor’cha flanked the Avatar of Tomed and the “Blood of Cardassia”.

In a supreme display of advanced piloting the Flagship Valdore deftly maneuvered in between the four Mirror Universe ships and appeared out of nowhere to disrupt the Mirror Universe fleets plans as their ships weaved apart to avoid collisions.  Smiley O’Brien seemed unable to avoid any other ships and crashed into the ISS Defiant and the Valdore in two consecutive turns.  This bought the big Romulan bird some time to push forward and drive a wedge between the forward elements of the MU fleet, Rikers Regents Warship and Siskos ISS Defiant and the rear members, O’Briens Prakesh and Worfs Defiant.

This gave Gul Dukat the opportunity he had needed to engage the MU fleet.  Using his Target Lock and superior trained crew at Battlestations he managed to isolate and destroy the evasive Defiant of Worf before it could engage the Valdore.

As the Vor’cha emerged from behind the third planet it trained its weapons on the advancing fleet and took out all the shields on the Cardassian “Blood of Cardassia” Keldon.  In returning fire from both the Avatar of Tomed and the Cardassian ship the close range firepower of the borgified D’Deridex class Avatar of Tomed struck an almost fatal blow to the Klingon ship before the Cardassian ship fired and destroyed the remaining structure of the ship.

As time drew to a close the final results were:-

Mirror Universe losses were Worfs Defiant, two Vor’cha class, two Birds of Prey and a Somraw.

Cardassian/Romulan losses……there were none.

A resounding victory for the Dukat/Donatra Obsidian Order/Tal Shiar joint fleet.

Mancave Update w/c 01-12-2014

So Mancavers, what have I been upto?  Well being the first weekend after payday and the first weekend in the run up to Christmas not much except sorting stuff out for the kids and Christmas.

I managed to find some awesome Star Wars:X-Wing deal at Chaos Cards so I bought a TIE Bomber, a TIE Interceptor and an A-Wing for £7 each.  Great deal!

I got a steal of a deal on the RiF OP2 Prize Ship – Koroks Assimilated Bird-Of-Prey on EvilBay so picked up another one of them.  Happy Jase!

I also managed to find a great deal on Necromunda and Outlanders.  Got a box set of each arriving today including all the original scenery which will hopefully be used in the Necromunda Midlands Campaign with Mark & Sam and Co.  Im watching some minis on EBay to use for my Redemptionists.  Keeping my fingers crossed.

I managed to grab some time to make up some more Battlesystems sci-fi scenery whilst we watched Dawn of the Planet of the Apes.  Getting there slowly but surely and with any luck steady progress like this should keep me busy until the PRODOS AvP Kickstarter arrives.

I submitted the first article for a new Wargaming Magazine today so with any luck you may be seeing The Hairy Gamers in print on a news stand near you!

So, thats it until the next update.  I’ll try to make sure I do some pictures on the next one for you all.  I’ll make up the Necromunda scenery and take pics of that.  Deal?

STAW 3: The Search for Brent (12-11-2014 @ NAGA)

Tonights battle was between Captain Brent Jay of the Klingon Defense Force and Legate Jason Marden of the Cardassian Union/Dominion.

Stardate 12-11-14.

During the initial stages of the Dominion War a destabilised Alpha Quadrant is on the brink of all out war. Sometime between October 2372 and February 2373, with a Dominion attack on Deep Space Nine imminent, Gul Dukat announced the Cardassian Union’s entry into the Dominion. At the same time, Gul Dukat announced his ascension as leader of the Cardassian Union. Five days later, the Klingons had been expelled from Cardassian space.  This report details the driving of Klingon forces from the Setlik System

A Klingon Defense Force of General Martoks Vor’cha class Bird Of Prey flanked by Chancellor Gowrons and Worfs K’vort Birds-Of-Prey entered the Setlik System at approximately 1900 hours.

Gul Dukat, in an attempt to show the new power of the Dominion supported Cardassian Union personally led a charge of a wing of Keldon Class Warships on an intercept course from Chintoka to Setlik to expel these Klingons from Cardassian space.

As the Klingons attempted to cloak and escape Cardassian space the Keldon Warships commanded by Gul Danar and the Breen General Sar took up defensive positions on the edge of the Setlik System as Gul Dukat led a flanking maneuver to come into the rear arcs of the three Klingon vessels on the left and outside the second planet, Setlik Secundus.  Due to the poor maneuvering of the Keldon fleet this would be a long journey.

Using the magnetic disruption of the planets poles the Klingon fleet cloaked and tried to push past the line of Cardassian ships by moving down the flank.  Sar and Gul Danars Keldon class Warships advanced into the sector ready to face any Klingon advance.  The faster Keldons closed the gap to, Setlik Prime, the primary planet of the system first and having evaded an alpha-strike against them proceeded to orbit the first planet and sweep in behind the Klingon ships.  The slow turning Keldons edged around the planet and using their superior firing arcs began to fire at the rearmost Klingon vessel.  Sensing they were about to be engaged the Klingons began to lock weapons on the Cardassian agressors and follow them behind the first planet.

By this time it was too late and the trap had been sprung. Gul Dukats Keldon had lured the slower Klingon ships into orbit as his wider firing arc was brought to bear on the lead K’Vort of Chancellor Gowron.  Utilising superior discipline in battle and training the Cardassian crew was able to make every shot count and even at the furthest ranges could successfully hit the Klingon Vessels with every shot.

Sars Keldon led the attack as it swept around Setlik Prime and began to unload all its phaser fire at close range into a stranded Martoks Vor’cha.  The orbit took Sar too close to the planet and he was forced wide in a long arc before he could rejoin his Dominion allies.  Martok evaded destruction this time as Dukat and Danar rounded the planet and began the chase of Worfs K’Vort and the Generals Vor’cha.

In a very precarious position both Klingon vessels attempted to escape the pull of the planets gravity but the faster Keldons closed the gap and continued to fire, raining heavy damage on both vessels.  Danars ship dispatching the Generals Vor’cha without any reply.

In a last desperate act of Klingon courage and ferocity Worf came about to face his prey head on.  As he faced the twin Keldons of Dukat and Danar, Glinn Telle reduced the weaponry of the K’vort by almost half and when attacked the shields were destroyed on Danars ship.  Finally the combined firepower of Dukat and Danar tore the last ship to pieces.  As the pieces of the wrecked K’vort were pulled into the planets orbit and burnt up the three Keldons advanced onto the next system to drive the remaining Klingons out of their space.

Victory to the Cardassian Union with their Breen/Dominion ally Sar!
