Star Wars X-Wing @ NAGA

So having bought a Star Wars :X-Wing (SW:XW) starter set and two TIE on Black Friday I asked around at NAGA to see if someone wanted to give a n00b a schooling (and restore some pride for the defeats I had inflicted at Star Trek :Attack Wing).

A nice fella called Sean offered to show me the ropes.  When I arrived everything was setup.  We exchanged pleasantries and Sean began to patiently explain some of the key differences between SW:XW and ST:AW.  The mechanics are for the most part very similar with the exceptions being Cloak and Barrel Roll/Sensor Echo.  There are also slight difference to how the Fighter scaled game deals with obstacles as opposed to the Capitol Ship scaled game.

Sadly I never got the chance to take any pictures last night.  I must try harder in future.

I was given the choice of a 100 or 150 pt Imperial Fleet (the difference being the addition of a pimped out Decimator).  I chose the 100pt fleet as its all I can muster once my stuff arrives.  I was given 5 ships.  Whisper in a TIE Phantom, Saber Squadron Pilot in a TIE Interceptor, Howlrunner in a TIE Fighter and two Academy Pilots in TIE Fighters.  I setup with my two Academy guys infront of Howl on the right flank so I could arc into the asteroid field.  On the left was the Saber Squadron Pilot with Whisper just inside.
Sean had Rebels.  He had Wedge and Biggs in X-Wing’s, “Dutch” in a Y-Wing and a Bandit Squadron Pilot in a Z-95.  He set up in a line across his side of the mat.
My TIE Squadron engaged his Z-95 and Wedge whilst Biggs and Dutch took on Whisper and Saber.  All my ships took slight damage but with no shields the damage started to rack up.  The TIEs took out the Z-95 and Howl got 4 hits and crits against Wedge through an asteroid at Range 3 which kinda did him.  In return they took out one of the Academy sacrifices…I mean pilots.
Whisper lasted longer as he cloaked and I took my time to get into position.  I took a few bits of damage flying completely over asteroids and bumped a few times but in other areas my piloting was immense barrel rolling into arc at range 1 and decloaking, moving and boosting into range 1 with Whisper.
In the end it was a 1 hull Biggs and a 2 hull Dutch limping away having dealt with the remaining Imperials.
Whisper is a beast!  Howl was awesome.
A great time was had and I will be back for revenge……hopefully.  Much thanks to Sean for showing me the game.

Update (Star Wars: X-Wing, Crusading, Mutant Chronicles)

So yesterday whilst being a good father, devoted partner and cheapo perusing the Black Friday deals on Amazon I stumble across some very cheap Star Wars: X-Wing goodies coming up.  Further investigation also finds me the cheapeast copy of the Core Starter Set for X-Wing I’ve seen anywhere recently.  I really dont think I should get into another game but its such a good deal…..so about £30 later I am the proud owner of a Star Wars: X-Wing Core Set, a TIE Phantom and a TIE Defender.

So now its time to plan for the SW: XW guys at NAGA to get their revenge on me for beating them at ST: AW by letting them school my Imperials in a very steep learning curve.

In other awesome sauce news I’ve applied for and been accepted as a PRODOS Crusader so I will be taking every opportunity to get some AvP demos at venues and locations locally.  If you know of a shop that would like a demo or a games club then please hit me up and we’ll arrange something.   As part of being a Crusader I will be picking up some Mutant Chronicles: Warzone Resurrection at some point…..possibly at the Black Dragon Miniatures Opening on December 3rd.  I’m think maybe Dark Legion, Brotherhood, Cybertronic or the British styled Faction with the gas weaponry.

Last bit of news in this update…..as The Hairy Gamers Tris and I will be writing a monthly article for a new wargaming magazine…Ravage which is based in Spain.  Hopefully you should all be seeing some of our work in that magazine.  We’ll be reviewing the “space combat” games.

Tonights game at NAGA was supposed to be Owen Cartwrights Federation fleet (the same one I used last week against Klingons) versus my Mirror Universe fleet however the US Postal Service has let me down so I was forced to use a different fleet, my Independents.  As we setup another player, Daniel, asked if he could join so I lent him my Cardassian Triple Keldon fleet from last weeks other battle against Klingons.  This ended up quite thematic as the Maquis (two thirds of my Independent fleet) are a thorn in the side of both the Cardassian Union and the Federation.

Stardate 19-11-20-14

Following reports of increased Maquis activity in the Badlands a fleet of Federation ships were sent to investigate led by Ben Sisko.  Orders are to intercept and apprehend Michael Eddington a former Deep Space 9 crew member.  Fearing the Federation would once again sweep activity of the Maquis under the carpet the Cardassian Union led by Gul Dukat also sent a wing of Keldon class Warships to destroy the Maquis and anyone supporting them.

The Maquis have stolen the Orb of Time from Bajor and using its temporal powers attempt to open a rift to the past to defeat the Cardassian Union before they establish the DMZ.  Before the Maquis can send their ships back a ship emerges from the rift from 80 years previous.  Khan Singh had broken free from prison with Cyrano Jones and stolen a Gorn vessel and emerges from the rift.  Sensing an opportunity he allies with Lore on the Gavroche and Michael Eddington on the Val Jean to use his superior intellect to aid them and defeat the Cardassian Union if they will help him get revenge on the Federation for his imprisonment.

As the Maquis fleet entered the sector the two Maquis vessels moved to flank the Cardassians as Khans scans revealed Federation ships and he attempted to engage them.  The Federation split their forces with Janeways USS Voyager moving to meet Khan, Picards USS Enterprise-D holding the middle of the sector and Sisko’s USS Defiant attempting to maneuver behind the Cardassian ships to intercept the Maquis.  The Cardassians moved forward and ominously not showing their hand yet.

Two of the Cardassian ships appeared to peel away to chase down the Maquis rebels before sharply turning and attacking the battle involving Khan, Janeway and Picard.  Whilst the third, Sar’s, crept around the second moon taking a long slow orbit to sneak up on the Defiant and the Maquis.

Khan and Janeway jousted as Khan stripped Voyager of her shields before coming about behind her to ready his final blow.  As he did so the three Keldons joined the fray and just after he had beamed Tribbles aboard Voyager he was cut down in hail of Cardassian fire allowing Janeway to limp away damaged and on Auxiliary Power to regroup behind the third moon.

The Maquis vessels took a low orbit behind the first moon ready to sweep in and attack Sisko and his Federation colleague Picard.

Gul Dukat and Gul Danar changed course and began to chase down Janeway in Voyager.  The rear firing of Janeway allowing her to do enough damage to Danar to force him to peel away and flee the battle lest he be destroyed but not before Dukat and Boheeka were able to tear Voyager in two in a devastating display of firing.

On the other flank Lore and Eddington engaged the Federation.  Lore busy sacrificing his crew for his own nefarious ends and Eddington taking his Federation trained crew of Tuvok and Torres into battle against Eddington’s former commanding officer Sisko.

A dual attack from both Maquis vessels crippled the Defiant leaving it adrift and heading away from battle…..without actions and maneuvers battle took its toll on the Defiant and she was forced to flee the sector to return another day.

Combined fire from both Federation vessels severly damaged the Cardassian ship under the command of Sar before a volley of torpedos from the Val Jeans rear arc destroyed the stranded and cripples Cardassian vessel.

A dual attack from both Maquis vessels crippled the Defiant leaving it adrift and heading away from battle…..without actions and maneuvers battle took its toll on the Defiant and she was forced to flee the sector to return another day.  Disengaging the Enteprrise who had by now also taken heavy damage the two Maquis laid in an intercept course for the sole remaining Cardassian Warship led by Dukat.

Meeting in the high orbit of the third moon Dukat evaded the worst fire of both Maquis vessel and powered past the slower and more maneuverable Maquis Raiders but this took him towards the Enteprise which had now steadied herself and prepared to re-enter the battle.  A tense battle over the second moon between Dukat’s Keldon and Picard’s Enterprise took place and when the smoke had cleared the USS Enterprise emerged victorious through the exploding Cardassian Warship.

The Maquis prepared and laid their plan as they hid in low orbit behind the third moon.  As the USS Enterprise engaged both ships deft manuevering allowed Lore to come about behind the Enterprise and Eddington to have readied torpedos to fire from his rear arc.  Before Eddington could fire Lore fed some more Followers of Khan into his Gavroche mincing machine to overpower his primary weapons and at such close range a swift end was in store for Picard as his ship was destroyed.

Victory for the Maquis and their temporal ally Khan!

Visit to Wayland Games for PRODOS Open Day

As many readers and followers will be aware yesterday Tris Taylor & I (The Hairy Gamers) went on a little roadtrip to Essex to visit the Wayland Games Centre in Hockley, Essex for a PRODOS Games Open Day.

It was a very early start…….6am as we set-off to do battle with the M1 and M25 on a Saturday morning.

Upon arrival we were greeted by Rob Alderman and Matthew Edgeworth promoing both the AvP:The Hunt Begins and Mutant Chronicles:Warzone Resurrection.  We had a look through the game contents although it was only a promo/prototype copy the quality was undeniably good.  The resin models had such sharp details even down to the bootlaces on the Colonial Marines and the images used for the board tiles were excellently rendered.  After many photos were taken a game was started.  Tris took control of the Xenomorphs (Aliens) against the Colonial Marines and Predators.

Following the game itself we wandered around the retail venue and gaming tables at Wayland Games.  I can heartily recommend anyone visit Wayland as the facilities are great and the range of products every bit as good as any FLGS you may be using.

Our VIP tickets got us a lunch and access to the Q&A session in the afternoon so we had a spot of lunch which was ok.  Then we headed upstairs to participate in the Q&A with Rob Alderman.  We took recordings of the videos linked below:-

Part 1 – https://www.facebook.com/video.php?v=923563434340133&set=vb.763787650317713&type=2&theater

Part 2 – https://www.facebook.com/video.php?v=923686677661142&set=vb.763787650317713&type=2&theater

After the Q&A we all ventured back downstairs for a second game of AvP.  This time I had command of the three Predator Warriors against the Xeno menace and Colonial Marines whilst Tris took pictures.

Once we’d finished we had a chat about all sorts with Matthew Edgeworth.  Some Star Wars:X-Wing chat, some Star Trek Attack Wing, other similar games in style to AvP which we can use scenery and ideas from for homebrew scenarios.

All in all it was a fantastic day, great guys at PRODOS, great guys and facilities at Wayland and it looks like a great supporterbase/community for AvP.  Im massively keen for the game now and cannot wait for my Kickstarter to drop.DSC00756 DSC00757 DSC00758 DSC00759 DSC00760 DSC00761 DSC00762 DSC00763 DSC00764 DSC00765 DSC00766 DSC00767 DSC00768 DSC00769 DSC00770 DSC00771 DSC00772 DSC00773 DSC00774 SDC10654 SDC10655 SDC10656 SDC10657 SDC10658 SDC10659 SDC10660 SDC10661 SDC10662 SDC10663 SDC10664 SDC10665 SDC10666 SDC10667 SDC10668 SDC10669 SDC10670 SDC10671 SDC10672 SDC10673 SDC10675 SDC10676 SDC10677 SDC10678 SDC10679 SDC10681 SDC10682 SDC10683 SDC10684 SDC10686 SDC10687 SDC10688 SDC10689 SDC10690 SDC10691 SDC10692 SDC10693 SDC10695 SDC10697 SDC10703 SDC10704 SDC10705 SDC10706 SDC10708 SDC10709 SDC10710 SDC10711 SDC10714 SDC10716 SDC10717 SDC10718 SDC10719 SDC10720 SDC10721 SDC10722

STAW 3: The Search for Brent (12-11-2014 @ NAGA)

Tonights battle was between Captain Brent Jay of the Klingon Defense Force and Legate Jason Marden of the Cardassian Union/Dominion.

Stardate 12-11-14.

During the initial stages of the Dominion War a destabilised Alpha Quadrant is on the brink of all out war. Sometime between October 2372 and February 2373, with a Dominion attack on Deep Space Nine imminent, Gul Dukat announced the Cardassian Union’s entry into the Dominion. At the same time, Gul Dukat announced his ascension as leader of the Cardassian Union. Five days later, the Klingons had been expelled from Cardassian space.  This report details the driving of Klingon forces from the Setlik System

A Klingon Defense Force of General Martoks Vor’cha class Bird Of Prey flanked by Chancellor Gowrons and Worfs K’vort Birds-Of-Prey entered the Setlik System at approximately 1900 hours.

Gul Dukat, in an attempt to show the new power of the Dominion supported Cardassian Union personally led a charge of a wing of Keldon Class Warships on an intercept course from Chintoka to Setlik to expel these Klingons from Cardassian space.

As the Klingons attempted to cloak and escape Cardassian space the Keldon Warships commanded by Gul Danar and the Breen General Sar took up defensive positions on the edge of the Setlik System as Gul Dukat led a flanking maneuver to come into the rear arcs of the three Klingon vessels on the left and outside the second planet, Setlik Secundus.  Due to the poor maneuvering of the Keldon fleet this would be a long journey.

Using the magnetic disruption of the planets poles the Klingon fleet cloaked and tried to push past the line of Cardassian ships by moving down the flank.  Sar and Gul Danars Keldon class Warships advanced into the sector ready to face any Klingon advance.  The faster Keldons closed the gap to, Setlik Prime, the primary planet of the system first and having evaded an alpha-strike against them proceeded to orbit the first planet and sweep in behind the Klingon ships.  The slow turning Keldons edged around the planet and using their superior firing arcs began to fire at the rearmost Klingon vessel.  Sensing they were about to be engaged the Klingons began to lock weapons on the Cardassian agressors and follow them behind the first planet.

By this time it was too late and the trap had been sprung. Gul Dukats Keldon had lured the slower Klingon ships into orbit as his wider firing arc was brought to bear on the lead K’Vort of Chancellor Gowron.  Utilising superior discipline in battle and training the Cardassian crew was able to make every shot count and even at the furthest ranges could successfully hit the Klingon Vessels with every shot.

Sars Keldon led the attack as it swept around Setlik Prime and began to unload all its phaser fire at close range into a stranded Martoks Vor’cha.  The orbit took Sar too close to the planet and he was forced wide in a long arc before he could rejoin his Dominion allies.  Martok evaded destruction this time as Dukat and Danar rounded the planet and began the chase of Worfs K’Vort and the Generals Vor’cha.

In a very precarious position both Klingon vessels attempted to escape the pull of the planets gravity but the faster Keldons closed the gap and continued to fire, raining heavy damage on both vessels.  Danars ship dispatching the Generals Vor’cha without any reply.

In a last desperate act of Klingon courage and ferocity Worf came about to face his prey head on.  As he faced the twin Keldons of Dukat and Danar, Glinn Telle reduced the weaponry of the K’vort by almost half and when attacked the shields were destroyed on Danars ship.  Finally the combined firepower of Dukat and Danar tore the last ship to pieces.  As the pieces of the wrecked K’vort were pulled into the planets orbit and burnt up the three Keldons advanced onto the next system to drive the remaining Klingons out of their space.

Victory to the Cardassian Union with their Breen/Dominion ally Sar!

Captains Log Supplemental

Three Vor’cha Class Birds-of-Prey have been identified attacking colonies in the Nu’nea’ton Sector.  The federation dispatched its greatest captains to meet this threat.  The USS Enterprise D captained by Jean Luc Picard held the line attempting to hail the lead Klingon ship.  Captain Ben Sisko’s USS Defiant was sent to circle the planet and flank the Klingon force whilst Captain Kathryn Janeways USS Voyager warped past the line of Klingons into their rear arcs.

Ignoring Picards hails the three cloaked Vor’cha captained by General Martok, Gowron and Captain Nu’Daq opened fire from cloak in a united strike and destroyed the Enterprise.  The saucer section seperating and crash landing on the planet below.

As the three Klingon vessels advanced the general order was given by the now marooned Picard to “Fire At Will” at all enemy vessels.  Both Voyager and the Defiant locked onto the rearmost ship and tore it to pieces in a blazing hail or phaser fire.  With no shields to take the damage the hull bore th brunt of the fire and was torn in two.

Gowron and Martok advanced between the planets and split in an attempt to divide and conquer their Federation foes but superior manuevering by Voyager allowed it to use its phasers at close distance in its rear quarter which sliced through the neck of Gowrons Bird-of-Prey destroying it and killing all its crew.  Voyager was now limping around the planet on Auxiliary power whilst the Defiant orbited slowly ready to strike at Martoks remaining Vor’cha.

Jousting with the Martoks Klingon vessel Sisko’s Defiant fired its Positron Beam causing it to run under Auxiliary power as Voyager rejoined the fray.  Unable to shake Auxiliary Power Martoks Vor’cha was unable to Sensor Echo out of Voyagers primary weapon arc as it began to strip away the hull on Martoks vessel.

In one last act of Klingon valour Martok came about ready to face certain death and charged at Voyager and the Defiant.  Before Sisko could fire Voyager fired its primary weapons tearing through the remaining hull.

Victory for the Federation!

Necromunda???

A couple of posts recently by friends on Facebook has had my keen levels rising for Necromunda again.  I’d love to find any of the stuff I used to have especially given the costs of things on EvilBay now.  I’m sure I had a Full Redemptionist, Full Ratskin, Full Orlock and Full Spyrer gang plus a stack and store box full of scenery.  I’ll be gutted if that’s all gone missing……could be at my Dads or my ex’s.

So I’m considering getting a gang and getting back into it…probably Redemptionists.  I’m also after a cheap second hand copy of the original game if anyone reading this has one.

For anyone interested the below link lists alternate places to procure Necromunda minis and some cool images to get the creative juices flowing:-

Possible alternate solutions would be Malifaux or Confrontation or Inquisitor.  Im looking for a 28mm sci-fi/dark future gang based game that wont cost the earth in minitaure purchases to buy or play.

Nuneaton Alternative Gaming Association NAGA 05-11-2014

So last night I had arranged an intro game of Star Trek Attack Wing with one of the guys who runs NAGA in Nuneaton.  Scott was his name and I had agreed that we would run 99pt basic fleets.  So equipped with fleets for Federation, Klingon, Romulan, Dominion, Borg, Ferengi, Vulcan, Bajoran, Kazon and Species 8472 off I went.

At first impressions the club was very welcoming and the guys came out to help me bring in all my stuff from the car.  The venue itself is nice, two floors of gaming tables above the Lamb and Flag pub with decent parking facilities.  Its not too far from my place albeit a little further than Bedworth Gaming Club.

The club runs every Monday and Wednesday evening with bigger games getting underway around 7pm.  Subscription fees are £2 for both sessions but following their AGM they intend on proposing an annual £20 fee for a year, which would be great value!  The club has a vast array of materials and games they own which allows people to try before they buy and they often run campaigns for newer players.  They’re more fluff/for fun players on a gaming night but pretty hardcore when its tourney time with a lot of very successful players in various games.  They are big into their GW Warhammer Fanatasy Battles (WHFB) which was being played last night and Star Wars X-Wing

The club runs a Facebook event for each session allowing you to pre-book a gaming table ensuring you will definitely have a table to play on which is a great idea.  I booked a 4ft x 4ft gaming table and enquired if they had any vinyl space gaming mats to use.  Sure enough when I arrived the mat was all setup for me on my table which was really neat!

Theres also a Facebook page for the club:-

I had arranged to play one of the guys who runs the club, Scott Moore, who wasn’t new to the mechanics system being a Star Wars X-Wing player but was new to Star Trek Attack Wing.  I offered him the choice of fleets and he chose Dominion (which sucked as I wanted to try them out) so I took Borg.

Scotts 99pt Dominion Starter Fleet

2nd Division Cruiser (34)
Gul Dukat (5)
Boheeka (2)
Ship SP: 41

Gor Portas (26)
Thot Pran (5)
Energy Dissipator (5)
Ship SP: 36

Jem’Hadar Attack Ship (20)
Gul Danar (2)
Ship SP: 22

Total Build SP: 99

My 99pt Borg Starter Fleet

Borg Sphere 4270 (40)
Borg Queen (6)
One (4)
Access Terminal (2)
Ship SP: 52

Borg Octahedron (40)
Tactical Drone (3)
Seven of Nine (4)
Ship SP: 47

Total Build SP: 99

In hindsight at that sort of points value perhaps the Borg are a little OP’ed especially given the crazy 360 firing arc and amazing maneuvers.  The Dominion fleet had some tricks and the Energy Dissipator was a proper wrecking ball against my Octahedron.  The game itself was fun and I posted a narrative of the result and took pics in another post on here.  There was some interest from other players (whose names I have forgotten so I do apologise) and I’ve arranged to play twice next week, Scott, using a Romulan Fleet on Monday and against Brent on Wednesday.

Following the session the guys helped me pack away and took a look through all the stuff I had brought along which is always appreciated and then Scott and I chatted outside before we went our seperate ways.  Seems a really friendly club with a very welcoming and relaxed attitude compared to other places.  Scott knows some of the local guys from Bedworth and Escape Games and we chewed the fat about some of the activities, tournaments, proposed future club stuff that NAGA want to do.  They play a lot of Malifaux and Judge Dredd so given that Lucy and I are looking for a new game we can both play a bit of without costing a vast sum of money in armies both of those may be an interesting option.  Who knows?

I’ll definitely be back.  Maybe post AGM I may suggest a STAW Campaign?

STAW: The Dominion Picture (NAGA Star Trek Attack Wing Battle Report – Dominion vs Borg)

**Battle Report**

Stardate 05 11 20 14

Following reports of a strange vessel from a listening post in the Randomis Sector elements of the 6th Wave were assigned to investigate.  Personally taking charge of the mission himself, Gul Dukat captained a Jem Hadar Battlecruiser accompanied by Boheeka whilst Gul Danar, his second in command, aboard a Jem Hadar Attack Ship followed.  The new Dominion allies, the Breen, escorted this fleet in their warship the Gor Portas at the request of the Founders, bearing their devastating weapon, the Energy Dissipator.

Dropping out of warp in the Randomis Sector the enemy were spotted scanning the two primary planets.  Despite attempts to hail and commanding the unknown ship to surrender and leave no responses were received.  Going to Battlestations the three Dominion vessels closed on the enemy.  The ship was scanned and revealed to be bearing Borg technology.  It was a strange shape, neither cube nor sphere but more pointed in design, almost octahedron in shape.

One the Dominon advanced between the two planets to intercept the vessel stopped scanning, spun and advanced on thier position to meet them head on.

At distance the ship seemed able to evade some fire from the Dominion ships but once the ships closed the true firepower of the vessel became clear as it proceeded to attack Gul Danars ship and the Gor Portas.

The Gor Portas closed quickly and deployed its Energy Dissipator which seemed to stun the Borg ship.  Adrift without shields the combined firepower of all three Dominion ships overwhelmed the vessel and it was destroyed.

At this point the true plan of the Borg became apparent as a second Borg Vessel appeared from behind the second planet and was now within the rear arcs of all three ships.

Splitting its firepower the Borg Sphere captained by the Borg Queen and One now destroyed the Jem Hadar Attack Ship and stripped the Battlecruiser of its shields.  As the Dominion fleet came about and all went to Auxiliary power to bring their limited weapon arcs onto the Sphere it mercilessly attacked the Gor Portas destroying it in a barrage of primary weapon fire as the crew attempted to re-enable its Dissipator.

With only Gul Dukats ship still active and an undamaged Borg Sphere in the system the Battlecruiser attempted to evade the Borg vessel by swinging around one of the planets and using it to stop the relentless attacking of the Borg.  The Borg however, who had already used this maneuver to sneak upto the Dominion fleet, advanced quickly spinning between the planets and flew past the weapon arc of the Battlecruiser causing castastrophic damage to its hull.  Without the ability to evade and with the Borg at close range Gul Dukat ordered all hands to escape pods.  This was the last transmission intercepted on the listening post from the Dominion Fleet.

All hands have been ordered to evacuate before the Borg assimilate the planets and strip all resources.
